okay so heres my concern,
i ordered over a month ago 5 chicks from mypetchicken.com
i am happy with my order however, i paid extra for sexed and vaccinations too.
i posted some photos of my girls, and i was told maybe that i have a mixed (straight run)
i am kinda angry, i wanted about 5 and now i might have a roo?
that wouldnt be a problem, but with them crowing in the am i dont want to upset any neighbors.
i dont have close close neighbors but enough close. should i call mypetchicken and complain, or just deal until i really know for sure what i do have.
i tried calling them but they are closed at 6pmeastern standard time, figures its almost 7!!!!! so angry and sad, the chick i reallly like is awful different kinda bigger legs than the others.

Sexing chickens is a difficult job, and there are mistakes. About 10 percent of the time, they get it wrong. It can't hurt to call them. I've heard nothing but great responses to their customer service.

If more than half were roos, you'd have a real complaint, but it sounds like you got one of the 10 percent in the margin of error.

I ordered from Mypetchicken as well, and it seems all were sexed correctly, as did a friend of mine, with the same result.

I got some at a feed store too, and most were sexed correctly. Out of 14 total chicks this season, there were two roos.

I put mine up on Craigslist, and ended up finding them great homes, and meeting some other great chicken folks in the area.

Sorry about your luck. It's always your favorite one too, isn't it?

I ordered 35 from Cackle and got another 35 from TSC, 70 in total, I got 15 roos from my sexed chickens.

I got a whole lot of crowing going on in the yard but my neighbors actually like it....they said they havent been late to work for 4 months! LOL

I ordered two mixed batches of 5 each from the local farm store (that puts in orders from Macmurray). I did BETTER with them, ending up with 3 roos and 7 hens, than I did when I bought a clutch or 6 a few years back and had 5 roos and only 1 hen.

My friend's 2 roosters (1 year old and 2 year old) were terrorizing her 3 year old daughter. A good friend took them off of her hands before I could, and had a greal meal. You could do the same.

BTW, sometime this month my 3 roos (4 month old RIR's) are gonna be dinner. ( It'll make more room in their pen, you see.)
I haven't ever butchered, soooo, my neighber who used to have over 100 birds, is going to teach me in exchange for one of the birds. I think it's a fair exchange.

I also ordered chicks from MPC and after about 10 weeks, I was suspecting one of my pullets ($7 extra for sexing) to possibly be a roo. I called MPC and spoke with their customer service person and she was VERY nice to deal with. She advised that they usually want you to wait until about 13/14 weeks, as by then, you will have a pretty good idea of the sex. If it is a male, she told me they would refund the price of the bird and provide a free chick on my next order. Your still out all the feed that you have pumped into it, but I felt like they were legitimately listening to my complaint and would address it as needed. I would definitely buy from them again, as I have been really pleased with them from the initial ordering as well as customer service on this issue. Best of luck to you!

I would think the My Pet Chicken would be really easy to deal with. They charge quite a bit extra because they offer such specialized service (like selling small numbers of chickens). I bet they would happily make it better for you..... But if the one you are wondering about is a Barred Rock, you may want to just wait a bit. A friend got 2 Barred Rocks and one is decidedly bigger, and more dominant. But they are both laying, so there may still be hope for your guy (er... I mean girl)

It's impossible to always get them sexed 100% correct every time from any hatchery or feedstore (90% is the norm for accuracy in sexing most chicks).
