Is it safe to buy birds from someone you don't know?

Yes, it is safe to buy new birds. But be sure to practice proper biosecurity measures and ask the right questions. If the breeder is honest, he will tell you up front what diseases he's dealt with. I always ask people that before I buy birds, none are offended but I have had one lie to me (as soon as the bird got home it became very sick with Coryza, it was isolated before it came onto my property and sent back to the lieing *choice word that's not child friendly lol*). I actually post my flock's disease history on my website. Take a good look at his setup and the condition of his birds. If his breeders are healthy and shiny, that's always a good sign, and if the coop is well maintained that's awesome too. Keep an eye open for wild birds in his coop and other pests that can spread disease. Ask if he shows his birds, and use common sense. You always take a risk bringing in new birds. Be sure to isolate the birds for two weeks, then offer up one, ideally two, "sacrificial birds." Don't literally sacrifice them, lol, but place them with your new birds for two weeks. If they get sick, you know the new birds were a carrier of some disease.

Hi All,
Well I asked lots of questions and he never called me back. Either he was lying or he just found someone that was quicker to buy on the spot. Thanks for all of the input.

BTW people keep saying to watch for wild birds that can spread disease, but I don't understand how the birds can roam your property and have no contact with the common ground of wild birds. Am I missing something?

Healthy-looking birds CAN perfectly well bring a nasty disease into your flock, even if it is true they have not been around other poultry (there are enough other ways to catch diseases, unless they've lived in a locked research lab)

I think people should be made aware of this so they can make their own intelligent decision, not just patted on the head and told to run along and everything "will be fine". Since that is not always the way it plays out.

So, you can play Flock Roulette (because some of the diseases floating around out there are not curable and chickens remain carriers forever), or you can quarantine *completely* for a month or more and rest on the likelihood that *most likely* if they're healthy at the end of quarantine they're not carrying anything. The safest thing of course is not to bring half-grown or adult chickens in period; but quarantine gives you a very much greater likelihood of a good outcome than no-quarantine, if you want to do it.

Good luck,

Pat

So is it safe to let them free range? So many people say that is what they do. But I would imagine that is also how they come in contact with wild birds. I am confused about that.

Wild birds spread cocci, mites, MG, and a bunch of other goodies. That doesn't mean your birds will get sick from being with wild birds, but it is a risk that could be easily avoided.

I wouldn't worry about free ranging. Just keep in mind that there is a slightly greater risk, and if your birds ever get sick consider they may have gotten something from the birds.

OK, so I spoke to the guy again. He said that he bought them from Mt. Healthy Hactchery

I hate to tell you but they will be EEs not pure Ameraucanas, but you could still get pretty green or blue eggs from them.

Really?? Is that what comes out of that hatchery? Well, I do like them too. And these birds need to go some place, but I still have to be careful. Boy those Ameraucanas are tought to get....
Thank You for letting me know...

All hatcherys just have EEs, you can only get Ameraucanas from breeders and the like. So most people have EEs.
