My flock had mites really bad and I treated their area with Sevin dust. Mom and babies are now sleeping out in the coop with the others and I realized that they have been exposed to Sevin. Is it dangerous to the chicks?

I plan on getting DE when we replace the shavings with sand.

Alot of people say it does But In my opinion its not. When my bantam were little i was dusting like crazy and they turned out fine....yours should too

I would NOT use Sevin on ANYTHING. I have degrees in Biology and Environmental Studies, and I have researched this product for myself. It is a known carcinogen and can build up (bioaccumulate) in the fat cells of animals. Which means it can be in your eggs for a very long time.

I encourage everyone to look up any pesticide they are thinking of using on the Pesticide Action Network's database. They have the complete unbiased scientific information, not just what retailers or manufacturers give.

Here is a link to their page on Sevin. http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Product.jsp?REG_NR=00740100154&DIST_NR=007401

From
there you can go to their home page to search any other products you are curious about.

Good health to you and your chickens,

Tara

Hi Tara, did you find anything you do think is safe for treating chickens for lice? We have some on our birds, but I'm loathe to just start throwing a known carcinogen at them

I've have been using sevin dust since the 60's. I've used it in our gardens, on our dogs and on our chickens during these years as well.
I'm still here typing. Simply dont snort it or it eat....just like any other powdered substance, use common sense and wear a mask.

We use DE under and over our shavings, nest boxes, perches crevaces, even covering the rubber mats in the barn. Keeps down on the flies too. I use a flour sifter to sprinkle it, or just throw hand fulls to cover large areas. a light dusting will do.

Also on top of food in feeder since the flies seem to love turkey starter food

Food grade AKA codex bought at tractor supply in 20# bags about $13 we use Red Lake Earth brand

for lice and mites can use Ivromectin Paste, Pour on, Or injectable (Orally or injected)
