Hi all,
I have a lot of Chinese toons, (Sinensis) and as its edible according to web sites on the plant, I just wondered if anyone had picked the branches and fed to the hens? As its a very hot summer here in NZ green food options are getting scarce. Looking forward to responses. I have learnt so much as new chicken owner from this web site

I have never heard of these plants, so I can not help you on this. But I do welcome you to BYC and enjoy all your poultry adventures!

I don't know if there is a New Zealand thread but there is for Australia. I'm assuming they would be familiar with this plant. go to

"Australia- six states and one funny little island." I would think they could offer the best advice.

thanks heaps. I will try that. It is a tree that propagates by suckering. In the Spring it comes out with bright pink foliage that becomes green over summer. You might know it as another name. It makes a stunning Spring display

Thanks for your welcome. I am a newbie so wont post often, . Great source of information. I have 9 Pekin Bantams just 4 months old. 3 lavender Aracanas. And a friend has a hen sitting on Barneveld eggs for me. So hoping for new chicks next week.

Hi, We are hearing about very cold weather in the states. How do you keep the chooks alive in the cold. We get nothing worse than a light frost here, and Im already wondering how the hens will survive that, although they all have very good houses.
