Is it safe to use lime in the chicken coop?

Most feed stores carry it, but ours charges $15 a bag versus the $3.50 it costs me for the agricultural lime. If you can't find ag. lime, ask your local parks and rec. department where they get it for the ball fields.

Folks if your still confused try reading this .

If your not tilling it in, or using it as a whitewash you need to not have the lime that is caustic.

In other words if your applying it dry or leaving it to mix with the bedding or soil on it's own use Agriculture lime or dolomite. Personally in the pens and coop I use Dolopril which is the Dolomite in a bit of a granular form so it breaks down slower so I can do it less often. It's not so big a pieces that a chicken can peck it up much and they still dust bath in it. It makes a nice bottom so that the coop is easier to clean next time, nothing is stuck down.

This is one interesting blog on why you would use the caustic to make white wash. It's the same if you need to disinfect the floors, you mix it with water and broom it on, then let it dry. DO NOT put caustic lime anywhere as a powder and just leave it.

The caustic forms are often called quicklime. Hydrated is most often the forms that are safe but it can vary by product name. Read the label! If it has the hand bones symbol or the skull and cross bones it's not to be used dry.

I put down Ag Lime pellets in my coop and run on top of the pine shavings. There is a roof over both, do the pellets have to get wet to break down and work? Just wondering because the coop and run still smell.

I used the traditional whitewash made of lime inside my Coop, built over 15 years ago. (see my BYC page pics) But to keep the smell down, I use the deep litter method on a dirt sub-floor.
