Is it unreasonable...

Again, the OP is only owed for payment if the birds were killed on the OP's property....if they trespassed onto the dog owner's property, then all bets are off.... everyone is assuming the dogs came onto the bird owner's property...not always the case... wish the OP would come back and clear it up for us...

In a previous post the OP indicated that the dog entered their property, tore through hardware cloth and killed 2 of her show birds. She is due compensation.

That was a responding post.

If you don't think they would pay you anyway, and if they didn't offer.... , I think you should let it go. Your relations with your neighbors might be real hairy. If you don't care about that, then confront them about it.

Not unreasonable at all! He should pay, or the next time that dog was on my property, I would catch it and call Animal Control. In Ohio, pitbulls are considered dangerous and there are some heavy fines.....

If you can't catch it, shoot it.

She is due compensation.

E.M. Silkies :

To ask my neighbors to pay for the chickens that their dog killed? It was a pair of show birds and personally I don't have the amount of money it takes to buy and ship show quality silkies at the drop of a hat. Any thoughts?

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear about your loss!

And yes, you need to talk to your neighbors and let them know that the silkies represented a financial as well as emotional loss for you. How much you want to pursue the issue really depends on their reaction and whether it is worth ill feelings should they not respond in a reasonable manner.

I really appreciate all the responses. Yes, the dogs were on my property and I've seen them chase a few of my free rangers and also tote them around in their mouths.

The dogs came into our yard again this afternoon and tore holes in our window screens. I have made sure that my chickens stay confined and aren't free ranging anymore. I would hate to also lose my trusty egglayers too. We had to take the dogs home because they obviously had decided to hang out at our house awhile. We talked the the neighbor and let her know they'd gotten the chickens and she was very apologetic. We told her the value of the chickens and she told us that if she could have given me the full amount right then she would but just didn't have the money. She said that she wanted to make it right though and would get as much as she could to me as soon as she can.

All in all it was a very good conversation and I definitely don't think we've caused any hard feelings with neighbors. We live out in the boonies where loose dogs aren't unusual but I've never had any get my chickens. She told us they were going to get chains for their dogs this weekend probably. I hate it for the dogs that they'll be chained up but I hate even more that I lost valuable birds...

I don't know about this one...obviously the neighbor is having financial problems, and being someone who has "been there" it's hard to be unsympathetic...to a point. I would ask for compensation of some form. If money isn't an option, ask if the neighbor could help you in some way to recoup the cost. Maybe help you fortify your coop? I know it sounds crazy, but they DO owe you in some way... Also, my sympathy would disappear if the dogs reappeared in my yard. Then it would be no-holds barred with whatever legal action I could take to get compensation.
