Is Layer Feed Necessary?

after problems with one of my girls feather picking, i decided to go with a higher protein feed (and may go back to mixing layena layer feed with it over the summer) - so on the advice of some friendly folks here, i now feed my girls purina's flock raiser. w/out looking, i think it's 18 or 20% protein... they have free choice oyster shell, as well as a small bowl of yogurt every morning. AND they free range most afternoons for a few hours. they've been eating that for several months, and 3 of the 4 have been laying steadily all winter (our ee took the winter off, but she's laying again now) with no noticeable change in eggshells or anything.
