Is lettuce that has bolted and gone milky inside safe for chickens?

Still thinking it's better to be safe than sorry. Good point.

I think I'd have to see the lettuce to know whether I'd feed that to my birds.

Silly me, I didn't even think to take a pic of it. It's long gone now, but I have another that I haven't cut down yet because I want to harvest the seeds, so maybe it will have the same thing happening. If I get a pic I'll post it... If anything maybe this will help others who might experience the same issue 🙂

I don"t think there is anything unhealthy about lettuce that has bolted, it just becomes a little bitter and most people don't like the taste. It is still safe to eat and is used for animal feed.

Yep...the original 5 heads I gave them were a different variety.. just too bitter for us to eat, and had no milky stuff. The chickens loved it though 😊

The milky stuff/latex is actually a mild pain killer. I know high doses of "wild lettuce" can relieve pain and also lead to hallucinations etc... so I guess there is a small risk with all types of lettuce.
