Hi, I wanted to give my 6 week old chicks a treat, can I give them the fresh, mashed corn without grit? They've been going outside daily for a few hours a day but are kept in our house at night.

I'm not familiar with the term 'mashed corn'. Does it come in a can or a 5# bag for humans, or a 25 to 50# bag for animals? To tell the truth, I would continue on chick starter crumbles for a while yet if you really want to treat your chicks.
I feed 6 MONTH old birds cracked corn for a "treat' and use no grit. I use sawdust for a deep litter, and
Mybirdsrock.

as long as it is all mashed and not whole kernels
but add some grit if there are whole kernels or cracked hard corn

any whole grains of course will be needing grit

Hi, the corn was from a cooked cob form our dinner table. I cut it all up into small pieces, but decided against giving it to them as a treat because they didn't have any grit and I didn't have it on hand to offer it after the corn. I'm a nervous nellie when it comes to them.

I don't think the leftover corn on the cob will hurt them, but no salt or butter, please! Chick starter ration has a complete balanced diet for chicks and they consume it like little pigs; it is really better for them. I also feed leftover corn on the cob to adult birds and it is unbelievable how clean they pick those cobs! They also love and fight over insects and worms.
