Hello everyone! I'm new to BYC and have been thinking about getting a couple of bantams for about a year now. I grew up on a farm and was around (free range) chickens growing up and would like my 7 yr old daughter to have a similar experience. Our city allows chickens (can't say the same for the homeowners assoc...but figure it's better to beg forgivness than ask permission) and if worst comes to worst we have friends and family who live on farms who could adopt the birds if need be.
I'd like to have 2 or 3 hens...thinking Bantam Frizzles and Silkies...not too concerned about the egg production more for pets...but the eggs would be a plus. Our home sits on a large lot and we have a cleared spot under our deck facing the north east that gets great morning sun and is shaded in the afternoon. I'd like to get a chicken tractor that I could relocate from under the deck to the yard (so they'd get some grass exposure) but figure most of the time they'd be under the deck. (They'd also be partially hidden from the neighbors that way.) Would that provide them with enough sun exposure? My main concern is to give the birds a good and healthy home. Also, would a coop that measures 3x4 with an attached run measuring 3x6 be large enough for them?
Thanks in advance for your advice!!
