I actually have mine on right now and the back side is not very warm. They should be sitting directly on the top of it for maximum heat.

She is such a cutie! Last year's chicks were raised with a heat lamp that I had to meticulously monitor for temp. This year I used a mother hen radiant heater which is more energy efficient and mimic's the chicks desire to hide under their warm mama. I didn't consider temp, but chicks do need a brooder temp of 90-95 degrees in their first week and they will seem lethargic if they aren't warm enough. I would guess that the remaining chicks would also be lethargic so heat may not be the issue. I hope she continues to perk up for you! Every batch of chicks I've worried all the way through so I understand what you're going through.eating a little bit!
