Is my chick dying or just cold?

With a large brooder, it is a simple matter of just having a hot spot and lots of cool space and not necessary to know the exact temperature. But, in a very small space, not knowing the exact temperature at chick level is a big problem.
Notice how a few chicks go in to warm up under the hover but the bulk of chicks are hanging out in the cooler air. This was in November and it got down to 40 inside the building at night.

My advice for brooding just a few chicks is to get two or three large moving boxes from Lowes. They are $1.35 each. You can cut doorways between them. I do this if I must brood indoors because of extreme cold temps. I put a heat source in one, food in another and water in another.
When done brooding, you can compost the boxes, bedding and feces all together.
I use a premier1 heat plate but in the big brooders I now use ceramic heat emitters rather than heat lamps. That way you can provide a daily dark period.

Whenever I've had a chick in the condition of the JG in the picture, they never made it. They are just too far gone.
