Hi I have 9 mixed breed chicks that are now 3 weeks old!
Today I noticed my barnvelder chick stretching out its neck opening its beak but no sound coming out. It did this about 6 times in a row!

Could this be a sign that it's a roo?

Or is this just something chickens do some times.

They will do that sometimes - I don't know if a piece of food lodges uncomfortably and they're trying to clear it or what, but I've seen what you are describing.

Thanks for your reply. I've been talking to someone on another site who said it is shifting the food it has in its crop down to digest if that makes sense lol

Haha, see? I even learned something from this thread! I would have been sure it was a crow, but it must just be some food!!

Bc i was like "WHOA! :O My roosters are about 19 weeks and haven't started doing that yet!" LOL

Maybe it's just yawning? But I don't know, six times in a row is a pretty strange number of "yawns". Maybe it was trying to get something out of it's throat.....has the chick in question done it since?
