Is my chicken molting?

Hmmm, strange. Molting it seems is way out of whack from this last season, apparently for all seasons for you. I have never heard of such a thing. Though I recently learned that chickens in the tropical regions don't molt like chickens in the northern hemisphere.

I am always interested in the odd stuff and in learning something new.

I keep all my chickens until the end. I couldn't imagine culling them, but many do and I respect that too. You are lucky to have chicks already. Mine aren't until May.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I think everyone has something to contribute to the vast chicken knowledge on this site. I am still trying to figure out why molting has been so odd this past season. Some of mine molted twice, and a few are just finishing. Your situation is quite a mystery.

@oldhenslikedogs strange indeed but I'll take it. On new chicks

I couldn't help it after looking @catalog, I preordered them in November and picked them up over a week ago, I kind of time them to lay eggs by May/June before it gets too hot besides I don't travel much during winter so am home @end of the day & to check on them morning.

One thing you can count on with chickens....is that you can't count on much..haha!
There are so many variables...and you know, live animals.

My Dominique had her first molt at 8 months old during the coldest weeks of winter. I was baffled-I didn't think chickens molted before they're a year old, let alone in the middle of winter but turns out they do :)

With my hen it didn't last long-she seemed to have grown most of her feathers back after a month or so.

Sounds like my hen!

feed birds older then 16 weeks and in molt Naturewise Feather Fixer feed. It will regrow the most lovely quality feathers and the hens may even lay thru the molt. Some BYCer's recommended it to me and wow was I impressed. Such lovely shiny healthy feathers my birds grew in!
 Best,
 Karen
Thank you! Looking it up now!!
