They do tuck the legs up, and spend most of their time inside. They have to go outside to get water though. 2 of mine look like they've been nipped by frost each on one toe, right at the fleshy part directly below the nail.

Yeah, it’s certainly hard to convince a bird to sit still, lol! I’d look up bumblefoot in ducks. It may be that. It’s common in birds. There’s a lot of articles on here about bumblefoot. It’s hard to tell from the picture or say for certain!So taking a picture was certainly a challenge! Here's the best image of the worst looking toe. I added a red circle to emphasize the area of focus. It looks like some tissue has almost completely sloughed off.
