This sounds like the start of a broody hen. Have you noticed that when outside she kind of acts aggressive puffs up a little and make low clucking sounds if a rooster or another hen comes up to her..?

My hen that just started laying clucks with very low pitched clucks when I check on her in the night. I think she is just uneasy because she can't see me. She is not broody, she just sleeps in the nesting box. (I like her, so I don't kick her out. :D)

Are there feathers in the nesting box? A broody hen would plunk her belly feathers out so she can warm up the eggs. Could i have a picture of her as well?

This is from a while back though
