Is my rooster ok? Strange behaviour...

How is he today??? Can you get any organic Apple Cider Vinegar? That is supposed to be a sort of natural antibiotic. You mix a tablespoon in a gallon of water.
Give the whole flock some. Also, you might look for some triple antibiotic ointment in the drugstore, b/c you can use that on the eye after you wash it.

Kelloggs is eating the porridge mix that I make him in the morning and evening, but for yesterday and so far this morning all he has done is sit down in the coop. I thought we were making progress but it seems like we are going backwards

I've checked the eye again after washing it a couple of days ago, and there has been no more gunk appear.

When I went to see him this morning his comb was a bit of a faded colour, but when he saw the oatmeal bowl in my hand it went red again?!

Still struggling to get any medicine for him, though I'm making a trip into the capital next week and there's a much higher chance of getting him something there. Been rummaging through the cupboards and things I can find which may/may not be of use are:

- Some antibiotic powder that I was given by the vet's when I had my dog spayed, to sprinkle on the wound. I have no idea what the drug is though, as it's not written on the packet.

- Anti-fungal steroid/antibiotic creme, for ringworm etc, which I also used on the dogs.

- Hydrocortisone creme

Do you think any of these might be of any help? Chicknmania, I looked but cannot get apple cider vinegar. I've got regular vinegar, or rice vinegar.

I'm giving him two bowls of oatmeal a day, in addition to the normal food. Should I give him more?

I'm not sure about the customs rules on importing medicine, also it would take at least two weeks to get here - the last parcel I received from the UK took a whole month to arrive!

Not sure if this means anything, but when I put the bowl of warm oatmeal down for Kelloggs, he dips his whole beak down into it, covering his beak and some of his face. He will then start to eat normally after doing this.... is this odd?

He might be doing that dipping thing b/c he is weak. He might be experiencing some sort of organ failure, too, in which case whatever you do is not going to do much. You are sure that he and the others do not have any nasal discharge, rattly breathing, difficulty breathing? Can you look in his mouth to look at his mouth lining, tongue, and throat? Maybe he has thrush, or, I can't remember what the avian version of thrush is, but I think I remember how to treat it. Mouth and everything should be pink and clean looking. To look in his mouth have someone hold him and then you can grasp his beak tip and lower beak and gently pry them apart (he won't like this). Turmeric is supposed to help with boosting the immune system, you just put a sprinkle on the food. A tiny sprinkle. Our birds do not like Turmeric very much, but it has been proven to work.

Comb getting paler usually means he's not getting enough oxygen, or it can be a sign of heart failure,
too. Maybe try giving him a little tuna, to encourage his appetite?

Hi all

Checked in Kellogg's mouth, all looks pinkish and couldn't see anything that looked like it ought not to be there.

I've been corrected by my husband on the pale comb issue - it's just his face/cheeks that looks pale, not the comb. It'll fade to a light pink/yellowish colour, but when he sees us with the food bowl it flushes back red again.

He's out in the garden today, we made a link between him not leaving the coop while the oatmeal bowl is still in there (we left it in the coop all day). As soon as you remove the bowl, out he comes.

He's wandered about a bit, but he's still not right. If it means anything, his feathers are still nice and glossy.

All the other five hens are healthy, there is no discharge or strange breathing coming from any of them. Looks like its just Kelloggs that this is affecting.

Tumeric, I can get that, tuna I can get in the capital. I'm off there on Mon/Tues so will try getting some antibiotics as well.

His eye is still clean, there has been no more eye goop appear since we cleaned it a few days ago.

That's great that he's wandering around some. Keep up the good food in the meantime, all his favorite things and as much variety as you can. Look for the baby vitamins, too. Happy Chooks, thanks for the tip re the wattle pulling...that'll make things easier if we have to do it again!

One more thing....I did some more reading and it really does sound like CRD, I didn't realize it could
affect their joints too but it can and that might be the reason that his walking is deteriorating.
You need a more powerful antibiotic I think, and there is also a vaccine for this...

He doesn't have any whitish diarhea does he? If he doesn't develop this, it's probably not Avian TB b/c that is one symptom both of our hens eventually developed, that had Avian TB.

No white diarrhea that I know of, I'll have a look round the coop in the morning to see if I can spot any.

I think you are right with the needing a more powerful antibiotic, but I don't think I'm going to be able to get one.

**Edit** - white diarrhea has appeared, and he's getting worse. Can hardly stand now.
