Is saying "thank you" so difficult?

Go for it. You won't be sorry.

And be sure to thank yourself!

I'm thread jacking, but wanted to let you know--- you will LOVE your KitchenAid mixer. I got one for Christmas for myself, and it's wonderful!

We are also teaching our children that it is necessary and proper to write thank yous for any gift received. Their friends don't and they've asked why we do. That just tells me how proper etiquette has gone by the wayside in our culture. It's very sad.

Because we always send a thank you for anything received we got a phone call from my dad a couple years ago. He wanted to know if we'd gotten the check he'd sent us for Christmas about four weeks beforehand. He hadn't gotten a thank you from us. We had not gotten any check. If he hadn't have called me to ask I would never have known he'd sent it. It was several hundred dollars! He sent us a new check ... that first one never showed up and never cleared his account. It's floating out there in Post Office land somewhere.

I too grew up writing 'Thank You' notes for gifts from distant relatives and friends. When given in person they got my biggset smile, 'thank you' and a bear hug! My husband's side of the family does not practice this. Several years ago I told him if I did not get an aknowledgement from his niece or nephews I was subtracting $5 off the geft card every year (B-Day and X-mas). He didn't take me serious until I showed him what was going in the mail. He then called his sister and told her what I expected. Now I get a phone call every year!

I always have other parents come up to me and say things like your son/daughter is so mannerly they always say yes sir,no sir and thank you, I wish our kids would. I always want to tell them its their fault if their kids dont, but I keep my mouth shut. My son is a 6'7" and 280lb linebacker but if he doesnt say yes mame to an adult in front of me, He'll get the evil mom look and it comes out of his mouth real quick

he knows better (I can still take him out at the knees lol)

Chirpy, you touched on another problem that I had last year when I sent my generous sister a handmade quilt wallhanging. I put it in a large tube so it wouldn't get lost. She always calls me immediately when she receives something. Nothing! I called her and she spoke with her mail carrier, a nice woman, who then scouted the P.O. The mail woman found the tube with one end opened and she was furious. Evidently, the tube was ready to "walk."

Henry'schickens, we never received any acknowledgment from two great-nephews for graduation checks last year--not even from the niece and nephew. Why send out announcements!

I am still waiting for "Thank You"s from a couple that got married and had two children over the last 5 years.
Gifts were given for wedding and the births of both children.

Yet another generation being raised to be rude IMHO.

BTW- I write Thank You cards. Keep a stash handy.
Wrote the wedding ones while waiting for the plane to take us to our honeymoon. Wrote the baby one's as gifts came in.
And now that my dd can write I have her sit and write thank you's for gifts she receives as well

In our house you say thanks or your welcome whether you like it or not. They could give you a used toothbrush and you'll take it gladly.

We've taught our 4 and 10 year olds to say thank you and write cards. My DH's family just takes everything for granted and never acknowledge a gift or something done for them and it really iritates me. I refuse to put on anymore of the family get togethers because they expect you to do all the work-It's a family of 11 siblings, all married with children some with grandchildren-A huge family!

The lack of THANK YOU's and other curtisies is apalling!

My daughter is 6 and I am astonished by the amount of people that are equally as astonished when she is being herself. ie polite.
There is a large population of elderly in our city. And they favor McDonalds on the weekends

As do we now and then.
She has always sat on the seats. Not climbed on them or the tables. She doesnt run around the place screaming. We have gotten so many compliments on her behavior.
One couple at Chilis paid for our entire meal and then some one afternoon. On their way out they told us that when we came in they were thinking of asking to have their seats changed. But after a few minutes they relaxed and enjoyed having her in the same dining area.

It's all in the raising.
