Is "scratch" like "crack" for chickens?

I wish I had never started them on it. It's my fault they are addicted. What am I going to do now? LOL

Put them in rehab

I've always mixed mine in with their layer feed along with oats and wild bird seed for the winter. Then as the weather warms up I just reduce the amount I put in till it I use it up then no more scratch (crack) until it gets cooler again. I can't make them just go cold turkey!!!!

Thanks Bob for the defense, I have never used "crack" either but I may be an enabler! I'm glad to see I can at least make a joke in this forum, thanks again everyone!

We feed our chickens sream rice with crumble mixed in with it. The only time I feed scratch is when I give them oyster shell I will always mixed in some different grains with it at the feed store. They will come a runnin when ever I go to feed them their oyster shell.

You are welcome Tmfries. I have no tolerance for intolerant people.
In life I've been blessed to have met some wonderful people some on the "mean streets" and some in church. Don't know if this is the right place, but this happened to me and it taught me alot about people. I used to hang in a pretty bad neighborhood of a mid sized city; dope dealers on the corner ,street walkers plying their trade, homeless all up and down the street. One day this homeless guy comes up to me and asks for a buck. I asked what he needed it for. He started to say food and then said the hell with it "I need 3 dollars more to buy a twenty bag of rock". I gave him $3. He said thanks and we chatted for a few minutes. Over the next few months I'd see this guy every once and a while. He'd always say hi, I'd give him a buck or two before he even asked. He'd always watch my car and do whatever else he could to help me out. One day I was in a goofy mood and I seen him. We chatted, but I never offered him any money. After a few minutes he asked if everything was OK. I said"Dude, I'm broke and don't have gas money to get home" This homeless crack addict without a pot to pea in says to me "Repo, I got your back", he reached in his pocket and pulled out a hand full of change and said "will this get you home". I told him I was screwing with him and gave him $20. I didn't help his crack problem, I knew he went straight to the crack house. But, at least he was warm and dry and happy for the next few hours. I would have missed a wonderful experience had I judged this guy on the street when he first asked for a buck and brushed past him.

Fallenweeble - I think that scratch is any food you throw on the straw or litter that they have to scratch for. Corn can be scratch. Crumbles, I think, is one way pelletised feed is made. I think you can get layer feed or grower feed as crumbles. This is the first question i have answered about chickens on this board so I'm very open to correction.

thanks bob!

thanks for sticking up for those of us who are less than perfect!

I feed mine a mix of "Jimmy Cracked" corn/Wheat/oats that comes premixed at the local Agway. They have always liked oats in the AM when I am having mine so I switched to this from just the cracked corn. They do seem like they prefer it but their favorite is some of whatever I'm eating. I also mix a bit of the mixed scratch in with their pellets.

Ok so they are spoiled chicks what can I say, best kids I ever had.
