is sharpie OK for marking eggs?

Hi,
I mark almost all my chicken hatching eggs with a Sharpie permanent marker.
The marker doesn't penetrate the shell or the membrane at all.
The eggs hatch well, too

I'd be comfortable using a Sharpie on duck eggs as well.

What about Crayola non-toxic kids markers?

I do belive that pencils used to have lead in them but it switched after it was discovered how bad lead is.

In my opinion, I would use a plain old crayon.....water resistant, and non toxic.

i don't know, but i plan to stick with my crayola crayons :| lol i know that that can't seep through and there seems to be mixed opinions on markers and sharpies

I doubt pencils contain lead anymore otherwise they wouldn't be on any school supply lists and all our kids would be getting stupider not smarter at school each day. I've read that Sharpies are okay and that's what my neighbors use with all their hatches. They just had a bunch hatch out under their mama the other day and there were a bunch of cracked eggs with sharpie markings on them. Her chicks are doing fine.

My little mallard duck hatched just fine and she was marked with a sharpie.

If you kept the broody duck separate from the others you wouldn't have a probelm with other eggs ending up under her. Ducks only lay eggs in the morning so if you could somehow put a fence around her just for the morning hours. A couple of feet of chicken wire would probably do the trick.
