Showing your bird is a way that breeders connect. They breed their best to enter into shows. The "best" birds they have are their best representations of the breed. By bringing the best of their flock, they are able to interact with other breeders of the same breed, variety, etc. They can trade bloodlines, information, breeding techniques. It's all about preserving a breed and what the breed was intended to look like.
After awhile, you will be able to recognize a good bird immediately when looking at it. It's always difficult to hear that your "pride and joy" isn't as great as you thought it was. Heck...I still get depressed when a bird places low, but I'm more than happy to get the information of the "best" bird.
You will also be able to see what you like about certain lines, what you don't like, what can help your lines, etc.
