PLEASE don't think we're bashing your bird! That is not the point of showing at all!

Showing your bird is a way that breeders connect. They breed their best to enter into shows. The "best" birds they have are their best representations of the breed. By bringing the best of their flock, they are able to interact with other breeders of the same breed, variety, etc. They can trade bloodlines, information, breeding techniques. It's all about preserving a breed and what the breed was intended to look like.

After awhile, you will be able to recognize a good bird immediately when looking at it. It's always difficult to hear that your "pride and joy" isn't as great as you thought it was. Heck...I still get depressed when a bird places low, but I'm more than happy to get the information of the "best" bird.

You will also be able to see what you like about certain lines, what you don't like, what can help your lines, etc.

I suggest you go to a show without entering a chicken to see what it is all about. There are a few different types and they all have their own rules and regs. Know this that any chicken in a show must be quarantined after because there are many chickens from many places, and you might bring something home to your flock. I have been to more than one show where I have seen sick chickens on display. I am sure others here can back that up with there own stories.

Showing is an art form all in its own. I know many people that cage there chickens that they plan to show so nothing happens to them or their feathers. As I said before it all dpends on the show and how serious it can get. Fairs can go either way but 4 H is usually more relaxed and more for learning.

If I was you what I would do is like cybercat said just go to a show to see how it run and what is like then if you think that you might like to do it then get a good line of Barred Rocks to work with.
There is a guy on eggbid that has some good Barred Rock egg on there now and then he is a APA judge and he starts them
at 15.00 a doz. his user name is dickschicks. But that is just what I would do.
