With my chickies!
This morning, I was out with our 4 pullets and one cockerel (all about 18 weeks old) and one of the pullets, Princess, started making this high pitch loud squeal/squawk. It sounds like a loud version of the cluck they make when someone else pecks them. She did this six times, took a little break and started it up again. I thought at first that she might be sneezing, but their normal sneezes don't sound like that.... Is something else wrong with her? Thanks so much!

Sounds like it could have been their alert call. Almost sounds like a trill but very high pitched and it means they spotted a potential threat. Sometimes it can be just that they spotted a human, or a jay/crow/hawk.

There is also a contented trill which sounds similar/near identical that they do when they are very happy. Like a purr (chickens do vibrate/purr too in case you didn't know when contented).

It sort of looked like she was in the "predetor alert" pose, but it wasn't her normal alert call, it was much louder. She hasn't started laying yet, do you think that might be her egg song?
