Is the beagle I adopted full blooded or a mix?

Well, things are going slow. She doesn't really know what to do with toys, so I think its been a long time since anyone played with her. I'm going to town this afternoon, and I'm going to buy her a few of her own, so my daschund Precious will stop being jealous of another dog touching her toys.

I'm really liking the name Sophie. I don't know if it will stick or not, but I'm thinking it over.

I tried to feed her some dog food today, and she wanted none of it. I put a piece of kibble in her mouth, and she LITERALLY spit it at me. Then I gave in and chopped up a hot dog, and she swallowed like six pieces at once. I'm going to get some wet food and see if she'll eat it.

What type of kibble did you offer her? How are her teeth & gums? She may require a higher quality kibble that has more flavor than some. I don't know what you offered but you could try something like Wellness, Solid Gold, Nature's Variety, Innova, or Eagle Pack...something with more meat in it than more common brands.....but if her teeth/gums are bad it may just plain hurt her to chew kibble. You could also try soaking or coating the kibble with something flavorful like low sodium or sodium free chicken or beef broth, the "gravy" stuff that they make for dogs, etc. You could also try just mixing canned food and kibble.

I hate to be the odd man out here or be the bearer of bad news but in my opinion she is not full-blooded Beagle.

Granted I am not a Beagle expert, especially on all varieties. I have had Beagles for years though and currently have 13" Tri-colored Field Trial Champion bloodstock.

While she is very cute, she just looks in the picture to be too tall and lanky. Also the head doesn't appear to have quite the right shape.

Nonetheless, that doesn't make her any less of a great dog. Just enjoy her for what she is and all you can.

Full blooded. Raised a few beagles in my time. I like her name Birdie!!

While she is very cute, she just looks in the picture to be too tall and lanky. Also the head doesn't appear to have quite the right shape.

I've seen quite a few beagles who looked almost exactly like her in "type"...or had one or a couple traits that she has. She's just a very poor example of the breed for type. My brother has a beagle who has the leggy/lanky body type and NO brush to his tail. He also has the "buggy" eyes that the girl in question has.​

No idea about whether she is full beagle or not. But she sure is cute. We had a beagle mix that we called Maggie. She was the sweetest little dog. But she definately had the beagle nose. Trash cans had to be up and all food had to be secure! We had to put her down though

She got kicked in the head by a shoe'd horse. It was so awful! I have always wanted to get another and name her Maggie as a tribute to the sweetest dog EVER!

She's cute ! Congrats. The heeling could just be that someone took the time to obedience train her.. that's not only for show dogs.. it's for well behaved dogs and diligent masters

I don't really care what she is, she's sweet and that's all that matters. I was just wondering what was up with her buggy eyes. I've had one other beagle who lived to be 11 years old, but that's it.

Any suggestions on how to teach her to play?

Our German Shorthair wouldn't play for a long time. I got him from the pound, where he'd been from 8 weeks to about 8 months of age. He wanted to play with our other dogs, but wasn't interested in toys. That was over two years ago, and he is still coming out of his shell more and more. He has rambunctious moments now when he will play with a toy, but it really doesn't happen until they feel completely relaxed and settled. He's gradually 'had more personality', and its been an ongoing process. He wasn't abused as far as we know, just didn't have much stimulation.
