Is there a breed that you’ve had that you would absolutely not have again?

I just want to say I’m loving this thread! This is my first flock raising chicks. I can already tell you we will be getting rid of a few BR Roos because they take my damn fingers off lol. And I’m very involved with them and have been since day 3 when we brought them home. There’s just too many Roos in the straight runs!!

Just popping in now, but I would never get another Welsummer. I was really excited when I originally got her, but now she is a pain in the butt. She never lets me come near her even though I socialized her well. She is broody quite often, but kills her chicks if I don't save them in time because she pecks them to death. Oh, and her egg color is not deep brown either. Although, she is hatchery quality so you never know.:idunno

My Blue Plymouth Rock is crazytown...she's not the leader, but she challenges my cool-headed flock leader...she's more the crazy friend who makes everyone do shots and dance on the table lol

I cannot say I dislike any breed. I can say there are certain breeds that don't fit into my flock plans.
Silkies.....yeah a bit to fussy for me.
Serama, sebrights and other super tint birds.....cute as heck but to tiny for my flock.
giant cochins....love em but the low production coupled with gigantic size is not for me.

That is just a few that don't fit my needs.

My favorite for their temperament have been Barred Rocks. They have a great temperament, friendly, and loads of personality. I have also had good luck with a Golden Comet and she was a good layer. She went blind though and I am not sure if that was a genetic trait or a fluke. My Rhode Island Reds are okay temperament wise, and good layers. I think they are not as friendly because they were raised by our very broody Black Star. The other Black Star hen that is VERY aggressive, almost like a rooster. No kidding. We used to have to collect eggs with a plastic bat to protect ourselves from her.

Does anyone have any experience with non hatchery birds? I was just thinking that maybe the reason some of these "hatchery" breeds tend to be on the meaner side is because of the way they are bred. Hatcheries tend to focus more on quantity over quality. Maybe that has something to do with it. I have mostly always had hatchery birds so not much experience with heritage or breeder types. Just a thought......

I hatched Black Copper Marans from a breeder. There were 2 roosters I kept back, and they were the meanest roosters we've had in the last 14 years....
