Hi everyone. Okay, so I have a barred rooster and a black orpington. I am hatching some eggs, the barred roo and the blk orpington being the parents. Will the chicks come out barred and be big like the orpingtons? Or will they just be all black like the mother? I have read online that a barred rooster will have all barred babies. HELP :)

I'm thinking they might. Thing is, your roo isn't purebred. But, from the amount of white on his barring, I'd hazard he has two barring genes, as opposed to a black sex link roo who only has one. Thus, he would pass on barring to all his offspring. The amount of barring they get may be up for debate. He may pass on the muffs, also. He looks fairly light bodied, so the babies may not mature as large as the hens.

IF you want Cuckoo AKA barred Orps just some whites Orps and cross them with black Orps and you will see them if the whites are carring the barred gene. Just go to the Orp threads here and you will see some Cuckoos already made.

if the roo on your pic is pure(homozygous for barring) all of your chicks will come out barred but will not be pure... take the best looking roo out of that hatch and mate him back to a black orp hen, 50% of the chicks will come out barred, again use the best looking roo and mate it back to a black hen... Repeat untill you get back to Orp Body shap and form...
