Is there a trick to refilling a round base feeder?

I have a couple different models of chick feeders with the upside down jar on top and the round base with holes in it on the bottom.

Is there a trick to refilling it when there is still food left in the base?

Even when using it for the first time, or with no food in the base, once you screw things together and the jar deposits food into the base, you barely have any food left in the jar. Seems like a really dumb design. I must be missing something.

I usually end up waiting for the food to go down so it’s not in the jar anymore and then open it up and let the little buggers eat as much as they can that way. You’re not missing anything that I’m aware of.

I don't mess with refilling mine until the food is down to just being in the base part.
I keep my chick feed in large containers so I set the base in it on top of the feed and fill it completely up. Then I fill the jar up and quickly flip it over and on top of the base then screw it down.
Ya I lose a little feed that way but no big deal because everything is in my feed bin anyways.

if you fill up the base and the jar before you screw the jar on it holds more. You have to be quick though. Maybe that is the trick lol. I always make a mess with those things but the chickens are messy so…it’s fine

Mine have an opening on the top where I just pour a scoop of food in. After that it’s gravity fed.

Perfect!
My brain never sees the simple solution. If I cut the top out, problem solved. I'm not worried about quail chicks ever roosting on top. But maybe I can refit what I cut off.

Thanks!

I just don't use the jar part, never even bought one. I only wanted the base and treat it as an open dish. Unless you have a lot of chicks refilling it once or twice a day works just fine.

Same here. I've tried it exactly that way.
I'm just trying to get a little more time before I need to fill it again.
Or partially fill it again I should say.

I was thinking of doing that.
But today when I unscrewed things and set the base down on a table, the next thing you know I had a little yellow chick walking around on the table

I was thinking I could just screw the jar back on so they don't have an easier way to crawl inside.

Maybe I need to add a second feeder.

But cutting off the top seems like a nice easy way to refill it.
