We purchased a couple of Blue Ameraucauna chicks. They are both doing well. Is there any way to tell the hens from the roos when the chicks are young? We have been trying to tell with the two blues but we are not sure how.

They are 4 weeks old now. One is much larger than the other. Both are absolutely beautiful.

The best way to tell is by watching comb development. You may or may not be able to tell them apart at this stage. Males' combs will get large and start to get red much earlier than females', but not always. Got pics?

Best way is to see pics, but with blues, I couldn't tell until they were at least 6 to 8 weeks old.

I have pictures of my blues attached. Let me know if you can tell. We think the larger one is a roo and the smaller a hen.

Thanks for your help. We still think the larger one is a roo. His legs are much bigger than the other one. They are both around 7 weeks old now. We also have EE's and Bard Rocks. We hatched some in Early March and some in late March. We also have 14 Bard Rocks from our original group hatched Febuary 10 of last year. We have quite a crew.
