Is there a way to sex Plymouth Barred Rocks? I just ordered straight run which is a mix of males and females. I would like to know if there is any way to sex them, other than vent sexing. I heard there is a way with the wing feathers, if there are 2 rows its female. Does this work with Barred rocks? What about that dot on the head thig? Can anyone inform me on this trick?

Thanks all.

Did you order them from a hatchery? If they have someone to vent sex them (like at ideal) perhaps they could mark the males for you? (dont know if they would charge exra for something like that???)

Small tight head dots and dark legs are girls, splotchy yellow head dots and yellow legs are boys. I think speckledhen has a nice link, or you could try google. But yes, they are 95% sexable at hatch by color.

Thanks, I hope I can tell at least a few females from males. I will be eating the males, and about half of the girls as well so my sexing only has to be around 30 percent for me to be happy.
