Is there any latch that is coon proof??

Hi All,

We are looking to change our latches to make it more coon proof,
I was wondering if anyone knew of a latch that gave coons a
problem on working??

Coons from what I have heard are probably the most crafty critter
that we need to guard against.

I do not want anything that I need a key for, so if all suggestions
could be key less that would be great.

I can hardly keep up with my car keys so a key to the coop could
spell disaster. I would end up loosing it.

Well, I'd use a padlock. As for keeping up with the key, get a bright keychain in hunter orange color, something gaudy you can find in the leaves if dropped, and just put a nail up to keep it handy, or use one of those bolt snap hooks and hook it to the fence. Keep the spare safe in the house just in case.
As far as I know no coon has ever figured out how to get the key and unlock the lock with it (unless you leave the key IN the lock) so you can keep it right nearby.

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. Though my doors will be behind material wire. I still want to have something good for the doors. I going to Lowes in the morning. Will take pics if I find something super interesting.

If you are worried about losing a key, how about a combination lock? You could even write the combo on the wall next to the lock as long as coons are all you are trying to keep out

. Surely, even a coon can't read.......yet

I thought about a combo lock. At lest I cannot loose it.

We live the country, I want to make sure that I put something
on that the coons cannot work open.

I ended up putting my pop doors on the inside of the coop instead of outside since I have a converted shed I can fit into as my coop. Simple eye hooks inside, flat door they'll have no luck with. It's inside the run anyways. Now I don't have to go in the run to let them out. Go in the coop, kick them out, do my cleaning and grab my eggs, open the door back up, good to go for the day.

Front doors have a latch with a carabiner (sp?) through it until I decide on a lock. It would take one big coon to stand there and get it open, nothing for him to stand on. Gate latches on the runs, useless if they get in there at night anyways, they still need to find a way past the door locked from the inside.
