Is There Anybody Else Here With Aspberger's Syndrome?

Jaimslee4u thought you might like to know that Isaac has settled nicely here. I'm sure he would like a few more girls but he will just have to wait until spring.

Hello ? Anyone out there? Anyone at all ?

I'm just the opposite when it comes to time. If there is a meeting scheduled for 8 am it had better start at 8 am. I hate it when people stroll in even one minute late. Or when the meeting is held up for several minutes to wait for someone to show up. I have things to do and don't always see why I have to be delayed because someone else can't get to the meeting on time. Probably why I get to work at least 25 minutes early every day. Anything later and I start to get nervous.

Ditto Widget... The one that really bugs me is when my vet is late...I just don't think that is very professional... I have activities set aside to help me cope...More than a 1/2 hour and I am a raving lune.

I am the opposite with time. I can't stand waiting for anything to start. I try to be exactly on time. I also figure that 5 minutes either way is close enough. I know that I drive other people crazy by showing up even a minute late. I tend to dismiss these people as being to tightly strung. I resent giving up any time before something starts. I think that it is my time not someone else's time, and i won't share the time.. The thought of giving even 20 minutes up so that I will be there on time as a true waste of my time.

On the other hand I often will be the last person to leave. I have always noticed that the people who show up early will often be the first to leave. I also think that being late for more than 15 minutes is rather rude and should be avoided. And if someone is late by more than a half hour they should either have called to say that they are delayed or they better have a really good excuse.

I have an excellent internal clock.. If someone asks me what time it is, I always make an internal guess before checking the actual time.. My guess is almost always within 5min of the actual time and it's not at all uncommon for me to be spot-on to the minute. If someone I know pretty well asks me the time, I'll verbalize the guess before checking.....friends seem to get a kick out of it when I'm right.

"How do you DO that?!? You're so weird!"

Invariably, the next question is "If you're so good with time, WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS LATE TO EVERYTHING?!?"

Stock reply: "I didn't say I was good with time management."

At least you know exactly how late you are!!! LOL I have the same internal clock... (I think it is because time is important to me)

I'm terrible with time management. I have no idea how long anything takes. And I have no internal "prompt" that reminds me "to do" something "now!" I know, for example, that I have to leave by 11:40 to get to my appointment today. I also know that if I don't set an alarm, that it'll be 12:40 and I'll get a call from the person saying "where are you?" because I won't have reaalized that it's 11:40! Or even, necessarily, that it's Wednesday today!

So yeah. Electronic PDAs- especially with a phone attached so I can call it when (not "if") I lose it - are a total necessity for me!

With me, I know how long things *should* take and that's usually what I plan for...but then things sometimes take longer than I planned.

It's mostly because I can be a bit of a dawdler who tends to indulge in distractions, but still...

For instance, I was in the shower the other day and noticed some scuzzy stuff on the wall. So, I reached out, grabbed a cleaning rag, and tried to wipe it off -- but it was pretty "on there."

So the next thing I know, I'm *in* the shower -- technically still *taking* a shower -- but I'm also *cleaning* the shower.....like, with cleaning products and everything.

(FWIW, I came to the conclusion that showering while you clean the shower is a pretty awesome way to clean the shower. I'd highly recommend trying it.)

So it is considered with the spectrum of Autism, but yet it is for the most part very different for the majority of us that know we have it or think that we have it. It is very different in how it affect a person than how Autism effects a person. It is something that you can live a completely "normal life" and never know you have it, or you are like me and know that somehow you are different, but didn't know why for the first 50 years of your life. I am scheduled to be tested for it this coming March. It is not like it will change my life a lot, as far as I can tell.

On the other hand if your brother is still very young, it may make a world of difference to him. The whole family will know what he can and can't cope with. That to me is priceless. I was labeled lazy and not very smart in school. The other kids treated me an outcast. I didn't understand why, and the adults didn't even acknowledge that it was happing. I knew I was different, and yet I have had to work from a point that is like every one else's normal in life. And yet I am different and have all the quirks to prove it. I have become isolated over the years, because sooner or later I do something that will upset the friends that I have had in my life. Because the assumption is that I am just like they are, and therefore I must have been doing it on purpose. I still don't know what I did either. I wouldn't worry about the labels so much as, just be happy to find the answers that will help you understand your brother better.
