wow, there is more support for this thread than there was for my Halloween thread... odd.

I can't stand the commercialization of Christmas. The entire holiday bothers me to no end. The fact that I still participate bothers me even more.

Christmas dredges up some negative childhood memories for me. We were really poor & I remember how hard it was for my mom ( a single parent) to play Santa. I associate Christmas with my stressed mom and all the kids at school bragging about their loot.

So, even now, with money to spend, I don't get into the whole shop-a-thon aspect of the holiday.
I love to have a family dinner, though. And I decorate the house a bit.

Last year, I was in Mexico on Christmas day. That was cool.

We have scaled back also, several years ago i incorporated a " Happy Birthday Jesus" cake to our family's celebration. Heart felt tears abound.

I'm comming to YOUR house for christmas...LOL

LOL! Sure thing! Come on over!

I actually love just being home with my family. We do the same thing for both christmas and thanksgiving, just my mom, dad, brother, and I. We cook delicious food and relax. Sometimes my dad and I go out riding down the street or we do some yard work. At night, we typically make a fire in our basement and watch one of the movies someone got for christmas. I LOVE that. I just hate that I can already hear christmas music (And its the same over and over again!), the stores have been decorated for christmas since last month, and people around me are ALREADY complaining about the holiday. Geeze!

This year is especially nice because my brother and I are now at the same college, so we'll have the same christmas break. It makes my parents very happy to have us home.

We don't celebrate it so I am obviously not a big fan. I don't really mind when people wish me a merry christmas since I know they are just being nice, but it does get a litte wearing towards the end of the month. I often wish I could spend the entire month of December in Israel.

DH's dad died right before Christmas so it's not just a so-so or whatever time of year - it's a baaad time of year. Which is unfortunate because DH's b-day is the 26th and MIL's is Christmas Day. We sleep on a lot on the 25th. Movie day if anything halfway decent is out.

One thing you might try doing to make the day more pleasant and less stressful is to plan the day to celebrate DH's father's life rather than grieving over his passing. Maybe swap good memories or do something he would have enjoyed or something.
