Hello all!
I have a broody hen who hatched a chick yesterday. The chick was alert, chirped and acted like a normal chick. This morning, the chick will not open its eyes, is floppy/limp and doesn't respond to anything. Its belly is still full of its yolk. Its belly and butt are wet though, I'm not sure why. From reading some articles on mushy chick disease its sounds quite possible. If it is Mushy Chick Disease, is there ANYTHING I can do to save this chick?
There was/is some rotten egg in the nest because one egg broke and it was rotten. Is this what caused it?
I think the chick is going to die, is it?
Also, could it be something other than mushy chick disease?
Should I worry about the other chick?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you can bring it inside with heat over it? Place it into a paper towel lined margarine container and leave it till it finds its feet. Might take over 24 hours..
I can do that. But if its going to die....wouldn't it be better for it to be with the hen? I mean there is still rotten egg in the nest so It would definitely be cleaner if I brought it in. Do you think it can pull through or will it most likely die?

This is definitely your choice. The Hen will continue to cover it. As nature goes she might kill it if it's sick and saves you from having to do it. I'd leave it ..

If theres a good chance of it surviving I will bring it in but if its about to die I think it should be with her. It could even be dead right now. I'll go see and get back to you.

I'm really sorry this happened. Can you place some fresh bedding around your momma to kind of rebed the nest with clean material? Hopefully she'll dry out and perk up and you'll be able to return her.

If you've got a gut feeling she's not going to make it you could just leave her with her mama but I think a soft, clean, dry quiet place is her best shot.

:hugs
