Is this a Australorp? And gender if possible

I dunno, it seems like it changes, one moment looking like one, and the next moment looking like the other.
Marans can sometimes keep you guessing a bit longer than other breeds.

This female chick had me guessing too! Same chick as above about 4 weeks old. She promptly went broody at 8 months old! She will be 5 years old in Feb.

I'm not quite sure, only in the last week or two, I think.

I've only raised 3 Marans, all pullets, but I have had a couple Aussie/Marans cross boys, who combed up earlier than that.

Some people, however, say that Marans are slow-maturing whereas my Aussies are fast-maturing.

You'll know for sure somewhere between 10-20 weeks. ;)

View attachment 3354150Here is another pic, in this one looking a bit more like a cockerel.
When it looks like this, I think cockerel, but at other times its a lot more pale, which makes me think pullet. 🤷‍♀️
Yeah the comb is looking suspicious here. Repost pictures in a week or so. It is definitely not cuckoo. It they only have Cuckoo Marans and Australorps then if it had an Australorp father and Marans mother all pullets would be black and brothers barred. If this is indeed a cockerel and since it's solid black, then there is a missing piece to this story and they may have another color of Marans. The feathered legs rule out Australorp :)
