cockerels should have red wattles by 5 weeks.
Marans are often considered a slower-maturing breed -- though there are undoubtedly variations between hatchery and breeder birds and from one hatchery and/or breeder to another.

I think around 12 weeks if it is male you'll start to see evidence of saddle feathers.I can't wait that long!

Reminds me of the Dominique chicks I ordered a yr ago( different shades ,different feather pattern, different sizes and different combs) 4 were barred rocks and one a cockerelI can't wait that long!
I think you're right on gender, but not sure on breed or cross.I got 12 shipped eggs, 8 were meant to be Marans, and 4 were meant to be Australorps. There were 12 dark brown eggs, and 4 cream eggs. None of the cream eggs hatched so I thought all 7 chicks I ended up with were Marans.
However, one of the chicks looks like an Australorp?View attachment 3353329View attachment 3353330I'm rather puzzled how it came from a dark egg.... and half wondered if it could be a cross?
Also, any idea on sex? I'm thinking most likely cockerel.
Oops, sorry. I should've read through the thread more..I think you're right on gender, but not sure on breed or cross.
Are your marans the french variety?
No problem at all!Oops, sorry. I should've read through the thread more..
Interesting. I think I'd have to say Australorp, or a cross. No problem at all!
And I'm still not quite sure, so you thoughts are very welcome.
I think they are French, as they all seem to have feathered legs.
It has got feathered leg though, not tons of them, but they are definitely there.Interesting. I think I'd have to say Australorp, or a cross.
Heck, maybe even a nonfeathered legged marans.
