I just candled my Day 5 chicken eggs and one of them has an embryo and then a dark ring around the perimeter of the vasculature. I can't tell if it's actually vasculature or a blood ring. How do I tell the difference without the egg exploding eventually?! The other eggs don't have it.

It's hard to see, but if you kind of unfocus you can see the shadow of the embryo up near the top and the ring around the bottom of the egg

I would leave it for another 3-4 and re check it. It looks like a blood ring..sorry if it is..I know how frustrating it is to find one. -.-
:) good luck though..keep me posted!

Ok, I'll leave a little longer. I just got rid of 2 clears and one is looking like a dud but I'm not completely sure.

This might be a weird question, but if I cracked the egg would it smell bad? I'd love to examine it if it's not going to explode or smell super gross...

It shouldnt smell bad but usually I crack mine open in a plastic baggy thats sealed shut JUST IN CASE. I open 3 out of every hatch no matter if theres babies or not to check on growth and whatnot. :D its part of what I do.

What causes bloodrings? I found 3 last night when I candled on day 7, new egg supplier. Never had one before

It' just a sign that the embryo has died. Could be a ring of bacteria, could just be vasculature that is degrading. All I know for sure is that it's not a good thing to find :/

These eggs are from a new supplier, and I must admit i was not impressed with the condition of her coops. Very dirty.
Where would the bacteria come from? Could it be from the dirty enviroment the eggs came from?

Some of the eggs were a bit old, 9-11 days, older eggs more prone perhaps?

Thanks for the input!!

It could get in through the pores, or if they were older it could just be that they weren't fresh enough to produce a good embryo. I think it's just a general sign of death an embryo.

The gal i got the eggs from just replaced them in a HUGE way, dropped of 7 dozen eggs of various breeds including the two I started with.
We shall see next week when i candle if this is going to be an issue with both batches.

Thanks again for the input everyone.
