Is this a BR or SexLink?

I'm leaning toward that more, if it's really the feather color, Kitty. Doesnt even really look like sexlink coloring exactly. What a puzzler!

Since the chickens free range, is it possible it could be oil stains from getting under a vehicle of some sort. I know when mine free range during the day they sometimes get under my car and hang out there.
It's a possibility. Oil doesn't wash out easily either. Sure hope you find out.

Hmmm, I don't have any cars but I do have my riding lawn mower where they can indeed get under it. That is a good point, the only thing is, this is in a perfect chevron pattern on both sides and even.

It is a puzzle. He was 7.5 weeks when I took the picture and I know at 4-5 weeks he did not have that coloring. Or, at least it was not apparent.

I had one with the same thing going on (he lives with my mother now) and at first I thought he was getting dirty. Now he is about 16/17 weels old and has long rust colored saddle feathers and neck feathers. He still has some mixed around his back, too. The ONLY thing I can think is that he has to be a sex link....he is from TSC. Very sweet and it actually looks pretty now that it doesn't look like dirty spots anymore.

My mix BR's have that gold/rust colored feathers coming in all around them. THey are just beautiful.

Well, it may be that Cynthia was right on: a sex link. I guess I will just watch him as he grows older.

Say, does this mean he may not be a banty? Do they have banty sex links?

If he truly has been "mixed" with another chicken somewhere down the line, that still doesn't make him a sex-link. A sex-link is a hybrid chicken that is crossed with a specific breed to make that breed of a sex-link. Like Black Sex-Links, Golden Comets, Red Sex-Link, ect...

Stacey is correct. He could be just a mixed breed but not a sexlink. I was saying sexlink because they do look like badly barred Barred Rocks and sometimes have odd coloring in their hackles and sickle feathers. So, it could be either one, but in any case, sexlink or not sexlink, it would still be a crossbreed.

Didn't really want a crossbreed. Wanted to have a good caretaker of my flock and to keep it going.
