Hello there BYC I'm very new to chicken keeping, and I recently bought 6 chicks from the local feed store, 3 are BR, and 3 are RIR. I was told they were all pullets but now at about 5 weeks I'm thinking a have a roo.

This is the suspect roo:

Her Feathers:

Her Sisters:

Also one of my barred rocks is about half the size of the her sisters and she has different patterning? Is she a he?

This is her:

Thanks for all the help,

If it turns dark red i'd say yes... but it is large but not as red as I would expect... i have a lot of roos that are way more red than that!

First of all, I am no expert like others on this board. However, I had a Barred Rock that was just like that at that age. Her comb was huge but NOT red. She has now grown into the comb and is no way a cockerel. No wattles either. Yours may be a roo, but I would wait and see. Five weeks ago I was ready to give her away. I am glad I waited.

feed store and hatcheries are never 100% accurate on sexing, so expect something to potentially be wrong there.

I have had RIR birds develop combs and turn red like that early on, just like you pictured, and have had them turn out to be hens. I would not worry YET.

Yep, those RIR get their combs early. The boys' combs get really big and really red very early. Yours is still very much in the pullet realm. Don't fret yet!
