My sister got me some chicks from tractor supply yesterday, she got 8 chicks, 4 were from the Cuckoo Maran bin and 4 were from the California White bin. This "Cuckoo Maran" is a little smaller than the rest and has a lot more black on him, he does have some white on the belly though.

Here is what the other ones look like-

And here are the California Whites-

What makes them not cuckoo marans? The others look like other cuckoo chicks I see online. What are they if they aren't marans?

Do any of your dark chicks have spots on their head to indicate barring? The second picture looks like too much white to be a marans. If the top one has no dot maybe its a black sex link. The second one could be an australorp.

That second one also has a white wing feather if that helps determine his breed... Most of his wing feathers are black though. The third one is a California white though, right?

The first bird shown has a solid black head... cuckoo/barring is indicated from hatch by a dot on the head. This chick does not have cuckoo/barring genes

First one looks like too much black and no head spot.
Second looks like not enough black.
Both have wrong shank (leg) color for marans.
Third does look like California white.

Alright, thanks! I will post an update in 2 weeks or so when they are starting to feather, maybe then you guys can determine what they are. I have a few black australorps last year that looked like the 2nd one, maybe that is it?
