Is this a hen or "transgender " roo?

If your hens are older they will/can grow spurs and if there is no rooster a hen will take the job as a flock leader including a weak crow. There are exceptions to every rule of course but thats the more common reasons.
 
Ok, now I feel better about Tina. I've had her the longest of any of my girls. Since 2011. The next is my Jersey Giant Pretty Girl. She's almost 7. Used to have 12 but feral cats and old age got most of them. Had a great chocolate labrador that was outside most of the time with them and tried to protect them but the older she got, well that didn't work.

If you know she was laying eggs she is a hen regardless of crowing. Some do learn to crow, but it does sound different then a normal rooster.

Of she has spurred laying eggs completely and begun crowing there is a possibility of hormone disorder that could be cuased by difdernt things you would need to have a very check her to confirm, for treatment if needed and make sure is not chronic or fatel

Spurs can happen I have art least 2 laying hens that have tiny spurs they are much smaller (thinner) then the roosters. As for bossy hens. When we moved i had 10 hens no roosters, got a rooster shortly after. My top 3 hens at the time regularly mounted the lower hens, it's a natural sign of dominance, but they still laided eggs too
