I bought 2 Golden laced polish chicks for $25.00 and one of them was not even a day old and the chick died the next morning. I am not sure why but the other chick had a birth defect where the chick could not walk. And the chick died 2 weeks later. Then we went back to buy 2 more from the breeder for another $25.00 but we asked her to keep them for a couple weeks to see how they do. Then we got them 2 weeks later and 1 month later they ended up being silver laced polish instead of golden laced polish. So currently out of all those chicks I have only 1 of those silver laced polish because the other one died of the heat. Thet were all sold as st. run. Is that a rip off to you? Because I think it is.

a breeder has the right to charge anything they wish for their product. if the buyer agrees to the price, it is not a rip off. you agreed to the price not once, but TWICE.

did you check the chicks over before purchasing them? did you not notice the birth defect? once you buy a chick/chicken/any poultry item it's yours. it is no longer the seller's issue. they may give you another chick once in awhile, but they really are not obligated to do so unless they have that written in a policy somewhere.

just because you 'think' something is a rip off, doesn't mean it is. actually 'being' something is totally different. if you thought that plunking down $25 for it a second time was no way to justify that thought.

I would feel swindled, indeed! But if you pay that much for day- olds, you should ask for a health warranty. Even the fish store will replace your guppies that die the first day! And don't put up with birth defects, either. If it couldn't walk when you looked at it, you should have just left it there. And for that kind of money, ask for a detailed receipt, with the age, breed, intended color, and and any guarentees applied. It may be hard to prove to him that what you have is what you bought and not what was advertised, but it would help. So sorry you got taken like that.

I agree with Miss Jayne.

Personally, I wouldn't spend that kind of money on a day old chick. I could see myself possibly spending that on a pullet that is old enough to see if that is what I want and meets the breeds standards.

A good learning experience, but costly.

I was thinking it was that much because of the breed. But I did think it was rediculous.

Were it me, i would have called the breeder right away to let them know that first chick died. i would have provided them details as to how i was caring for the chick - brooder, temperature, etc, so they would know i was caring for it properly. i would think any reputable breeder would have either offered a refund or a new chick. But you should have let them know at the time.

Ditto on the second chick. Once you noticed it had a deformity, you should have called the breeder. i'm sure they would want to know if any of their stock was producing chicks with any type of deformity. With the breeders knowledge of the situation, you may have been able to get a refund or another chick.

i think most people are reasonable if you just talk to them opening and honestly. A breeder can't rectify a situation of which they are not made aware.

yes, it was a good learning experience at least for you.

i do have to say that there are shady sellers out there that don't care if they are selling to standard or even selling what they say they are selling.
ie: silver laced instead the gold laced you thought you were to receive.

to them it is all about the money. a quick flip over. now you know to look and look and look.

i have shown people when they come here how to look a bird over head to toe and they are blown away and never thought to do that. i show them to hold it and say how pretty and pretend to kiss it, but really they are smelling it's nose. it's YOUR money. YOUR investment. you have every right to spend it or NOT spend it wisely.

I think no matter what the business rules are, a breeder should CARE about their reputation and CARE that you have a good product and a good start. Even though you should educate yourself, you look to them to be the experts and they should help you get that education. I understand the dog breeding world better than chicken breeding but seems to me it should have the same standards. A breeder is only as good as their reputation. So, you could post a better business comment on them or some form of feedback that will warn other people if you think that it can help other people to be cautious with this breeder. I bought from a local breeder and from a feedstore. I had a VERY good, pretty much opposite experience with the local breeder and I would definitely have been upset and discouraged if I had your experience. I'm sorry for you but dont give up, just go to someone better. Good luck!

I did call her about all of the chicks and she said that there is nothing that she could do. That really ticked me off!!!!!!!!!!!!
