So around 3 weeks ago I bought 12 Orpington hatching eggs off of eBay. I had 10 out of the 12 eggs hatch and the chicks are amazing. However, one of them has feathered legs and I’m not too sure if Orpington’s are supposed to have feathered legs. I’ve attached some pictures but they’re not the best because the little bugger kept jumping around. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks in advance 🙂

Hi. I have three black/lavender Orpingtons they are splits meaning they were bred I believe in a as controlled an environment at the hatchery as you can create with a black hen Orpington and a Lavender Orpington Rooster and they pulled three hens out of the hatchlings after they sexed them and sent them to me along with my three Swedish Flower Hens and three Creme Legbars. Anyway none of my nine had hairy legs and I have a good many pictures but they don’t show their legs too good. The odd thing is that my chickens don’t look anything alike now though they all have black in them but as chicks from a day old to about four weeks old they looked very much alike. No need for any Nair or Razors though on any of mine I’m afraid. Now I have never researched whether or not they are supposed to have feathering on their legs or not. Have you?yet?

I just did a quick search. Only in BYC. Buffs are not supposed to be hairy so neither should any others. They are just different colors that is all otherwise should be the same.

I did a quick search on google and it came back with “The show strains have feathering that covers their legs, almost to their feet.” Not sure how true that is because one of my friends keeps Orpington’s and none of hers have feathered feet/legs.

Well when I did my BYC search it was a topic that had been discussed at length before on here quite a bit. Apparently this must happen quite often so there must be some sabotage going on somewhere probably like it does with pure bread golden retriever dogs and some looking more like Irish setters than golden retrievers and not having webbed feet or their double coats when they are supposed to have both traits to be a true retriever. There is just some cross or mixed breeding going on or folks trying to pull one over on you if they think they can get away with it and it be over and done with and nothing more done about it. Which is probably the position your in. You probably have a fat and sassy healthy perfectly good chick but it’s not a full blooded Orpington that’s all and to a keen eye like yourself you picked it up but the average Joe wouldn’t have known the difference. I don’t know what you can do about it??? I will say this if it’s even half Orp plan on a good eater, personality, people person, and flock member, they rule the flock, and they are the watch dogs or guard dogs of my flock. They are the protectors of my nine among my flock but yet the are still gentle basically. They are nine weeks old and haven’t found their beak uses and full understanding and damage it can do or pain it can cause yet. They will peck the crap out of my hand for attention or pets or food if I’m not fast enough for them. But they are smart birds and protect one another from danger and are problem solvers for the flock. They were the first to use the nipples on the waterers and they were my strongest flyers at first. So good luck with your dime bag! Lol!
