Is this coccidiosis or something else? WARNING: POOP PICTURE

I'm may be mistaken but I think the Sulphamezathine is similar to Sul-met (Sul-Met), Sulfa-Max, SulfaSure (Sodium Sulfamethazine) which can be used to treat certain strains of Coccidiosis. Some drugs are not available and may be called by a different name in certain parts of the world.

Corid helps control all strains of Cocci found in poultry, so it is more widely used, especially in the U.S. IF your chicks don't improve after treating them several days with the Sulphamezathine, then trying to find some Corid may be a good idea.

@CTKen is probably much more familiar with meds that are available in Africa, so hopefully he may drop by for some input.

Thanks, it was public holiday today so all the vets were closed. Only the farm supply store was open, and that was all they had. It seems the chicks have perked up a little already, They^re still very drowsy, but at least seem to be eating on their own now. I will definitely take your advice, if they don't improve I will try the vet to see if they have something better. The Sulphamezathine is supposed to work in 3 days so I will hopefully know soon enough.

I'm glad to hear they seem to be improving. Try to keep them hydrated - so push the medicated water.

Keep us posted.

Thank you. I'm still feeding them the water with a syringe every couple of hours to make sure they get enough. This morning I don't see any blood in the poos from last night, just very stinky, runny poo. Is that from the medication or part of the healing? Or is it a bad sign? They're still mostly fluffed up in a corner but I'm guessing it will take a while for them to start behaving normally again.

How are they doing?

Getting the medicated water into them is good. Are they eating as well? You can try offering wet chick starter to entice them to eat a little.

If you don't see improvement soon, if you have a vet that can get you some Corid, that may be a good idea.

I was giving them chick starter mixed with yogurt but they didn't like it and weren't eating, so I switched to chick started mixed with warm water. 2 of them are eating better, but the one who was the first to show symptoms originally seems to not be eating enough. She's lost so much weight she's just skin and bones. She's the one who seems to have the most energy strangely, and if I feed her with a spoon she does eat. But it's like she gets tired before she's eaten much and her crop just isn't filling up. She's also very weak and loses her balance very easily. Her weight loss is scaring me.

A small update: All three are eating more enthusiastically and moving around a lot more. They're still sleeping quite a bit, especially the smallest one, but they definitely seem to have more energy. The one that had gotten so skinny still isn't filling it's crop properly, but it is eating on it's own and it's eyes are looking less sunken. It's also looking a bit stronger, it's not falling over all the time anymore. The one that pooped the most red, but was the strongest out of the three is already looking like he might be ready to go back outside soon. Any tips on how long I should keep them inside and seperated from the others?

Ok, so two of the chicks (including the one who's not eating enough) were ignoring the wet food and scratching around in the wood shavings looking for food, and the little one was fluffed up in the corner again. So I removed the wet food and put some dry chick feed in with them and they went nuts. It even got the little sleepy one excited enough to come have a nibble. Sorry for all the posts, I'm just trying to figure this out, I really want them to recover and I just wasn't happy with how little they were eating. I've tried giving them scrambled egg too and they wouldn't touch it. Is straight chick feed ok or should I be adding something to it till they get back to normal?

Straight chick feed is fine. If they are going nuts for it let them have it

It does sound like they are slowly recovering. Keep doing what you have been. As for when they can go back outside, you will need to determine that. Usually the sooner the better.

Keep us posted.

Thanks, hopefully now that they've eaten properly they'll recover more quickly. I'll let you know how it goes. I just noticed one has gotten a bit of a poopy but. Is there a way to get it off without soaking the whole chick? It's dried on and some parts are not coming off very easily when I wipe it. I'm a bit worried if i soak the chick it will get too cold.

Here are the sick babies.
This is the one that wasn't eating, but stuffed herself now and seems full of energy again.

And this is the one that just sleeps all the time. You can see she's covered in food because she keeps falling asleep in the food bowl. She seems to be eating enough, but otherwise just sleeping, so I'm still giving her medicated water with a syringe.

I don't have a pic of the other one, he seems almost back to normal already.
