Is this cochin Lemon Blue?

Now Poulets...you know that would be entirely too simple!

Nice to see you back!

Ok, thanks everyone, but I am still confused,,, in researching lemon blues, I am seeing pictures of lovely yellow and blue birds. This bird is orange and blue, with no lacing or patterns. He looks like a light blue chicken dipped in gold/orange paint upside down and allowed to dry. top half is orange, bottom is blue. Doesnt look like the lemon blues I have seen images of....

Since I will never know his genetics, should I put him in my blue cochin pen? or my buffs? I have considered getting red cochins, just for him, but dont really want to....

I guess I am just not believing he is a 'lemon cochin'!

There's always the possibility that the seller was entirely correct when she said it was a Red/Blue. I believe that the blue would dilute the red more of a golden color, which he is displaying.

You didn't mention if it is a bantam or LF, and how old it is. I'm guessing a young LF? If it is a bantam, I'm not sure I would use him in a breeding program, as he's not currently displaying the best of type for a bantam. But that's a personal preference, and perhaps you have an excellent hen for him.

You mentioned working on BLR with him - for that you would need both Pg (Pattern) and Co (Columbian) genes. Typically, to start on BLR, you need to start with Golden Laced x Blue (or Splash).

Thank you, very helpful, I am unsure what LF is, but he is not bantam, he is a young roo, I estimate 4 months. Yeah, he is not the roundest looking cochin I have ever seen, but he has potential, and I have some really round and good quality hens in my blue pen, but only one golden laced. I do have some nice partridge that may work?

Unfortunately, since people are using buff x blue to breed their version of lemon-blue, there are several different variations of what the buff-blue comes out looking like. Kind of like Easter Eggers. You never know exactly what color will go where on them. In a true lemon blue bird, the lemon color remains in the hackle feathers of hens and hackle, saddle and in some cases the upper covert feathers of the wings.

Edit: I would put him in both pens, rotate him around and see what you get.

That is correct. The true Lemon Blue color is Brown Red that has been diluted by blue ( blue replaceing the black in a brown red bird) NOT cross crossing Buffs and Blues, the problem with cochins is, is that both true Lemon Blues and the Buff X Blue crosses exist, but everyone is for some reason, calling the BuffX Blue crosses Lemon Blues and thats were the confusion is coming from.

As in gamefowl, here is the true Lemon Blue color pattern, http://www.bantychicken.com/OEGBCA/vlemonblue.html

Here
is the Brown Red color that the Lemon Blues are based on. http://www.bantychicken.com/OEGBCA/vbrownred.html

Here
is a thread from a week or so ago with a good explaination of the differences and others questions that may help. In it there are pics of both true patterned Lemon Blues and the the Buff X Blue crosses.

Ok, I get it now, that link to the other thread was VERY helpful, thank you!

After looking at all the photos, and reading everyones comments, I have to say that I think I like the Buff Blue that I have better than the lemon blues.... I always thought I liked the lemon blues, but compared tho this little guys warm tones, they look brassy and cold! Strange huh?

I think I am going to keep working with this combination, and see if we cant come up with a name that is more suitable, and eliminates the confusion with the lemon blues,...

Any suggestions?

Harvest Blue?
Orange Blue? (doesnt sound as cool as lemon blue)

I completely agree that there should be another name for them, there is a member here that were calling hers Tangerine Blues, but they actually were the true Lemon Blue color.

I dont really know of a good one right now but it may be fun for you to start a thread and ask people to suggest a name and that would also help educate that the color is not a true lemon Blue like a lot of people are calling them.
