It appears you have been given "scratch" rather than actual feed -- scratch is made up of grains (broken and whole) that is tossed out as a treat, but is not sufficient nutritionally to be the primary base of their diet.

Thanks for the reply, Ill try and get hold of some proper feed soon!

Thanks, Quailsk

I'm with Ol Grey Mare. You were given scratch.
I've known people that only feed that to their chickens. They don't do well for very long and soon stop laying.

I wanted to add that it was great you asked before your chicks suffered.

Yeah the person who gave me the rooster and hen was really nice though he gave me them for free with the scratch I was originally after quails but he said he had none at the time so handed me these two for free. Really kind person though however ill get some proper feed and the hen wont be laying yet anyway as shes only about 2-3 months old. Thanks for the reply, Quailsk

A neighbor wanted to buy some chickens from me. When I asked why, he said his were broken. I inquired further and he said they all stopped laying. I asked what he was feeding them. He said, corn. I said, OK, what else? He said, just corn. I said, you're starving them. Get them some chicken feed. After a few months of real food they started laying again.

I think thats the same issue with mine. I guess we'll find out in due course.. Thanks,Quailsk

Oh yeah, chickens need more than scratch feed in order to thrive. Mine get all kinds of things including various table scraps. They are five years old and still laying!
