is this guy a rooster?

I'm guessing boy, and he is not feathered enough to be 4 weeks old. My nearly 2 week old chicks are about as feathered as he is.

Here is my barred rock at 5 weeks old - this is from breeder quality exhibition stock, and they feather in slower than other barred rocks.

Well, my cock is sure getting bigger and is very feisty.

He likes to get on top of the feeder.

Now, here are the others he is in with.

Trying to figure out what kind they are.

Feather feet, LOL, but the last one is not feather footed.

On another note, my older red pullet managed to escape her pen yesterday. I was looing in trying to figure out how when I heard some noise/rustling behind me.
Shje came to me, wanting food I guess.
Caught her easily. She squawked a bit but calmed down when I petted her.
Put her back in and fixed the spot she got out of, so no more escapes.
I now call her Red Riding Hood, and her companion, Goldie...

I guess talking to them all the time paid off.

Anyway, I am wondering what breed the younger pullets are..

OT, I wonder, why is it that you are not supposed to give laying feed to chicks under 18 weeks? At least that is what it says on the Purina bags.

The black/red one is a partridge cochin, and the buff is also a cochin. Not sure on the black chick, could be a jersey giant or an austrolorp.

Layer feed has different amounts of minerals than chick feed. Its like feeding adult dog food to a puppy. Or like feeding a baby fried chicken and greens.

Well, he sure has been acting like a rooster. I decided to call him Roo.
And he sure is a barred rock.
His comb is slowly getting bigger, and his wattles are growing.
None of the pullets show much comb or wattle growth.
And, when I put him in with the two older pullets, one decided to peck at him. He retaliated by jumping at her. She tried a second time, and once more he jumped at her.

Not going to take any nonsense from them.

At night, all 6 are on the roost, and he is usually between the two older pullets and the younger ones.

I read that they will take care of their girls.
Now I a wondering when it will be reasonably safe to put any of them in the pen with the 3 old buzzards.

my bet is gold penciled looks nothing like a partridge (you can see partridge in my albums) the other is a buff cochin and the black looks like a BA

My neighbor just rehomed her boy barred rock. He was feisty as a chick and ended up beating up his hens and his owners. She could not cull him, so she sent him with a family member with a big farm and a new set of ladies. I guess he's doing well with added space so far, but I bet my money he'll go back to his old ways in no time! He attacked several times and his attacks to humans were brutal.

My neighbor found a beautiful BLRW adult that we both looked at yesterday. He was so sweet and let us pick him up. She's officially bringing him home next Monday. Apparently they are leaving for the weekend and she wants him to settle nicely. I can't wait. My hubby won't allow me to get a rooster or I'd snatch him up if she didn't take him. He does crow a bit, which is no big deal.
