^^^Good point about upside down being hard on the bird. ^^^

Since I treat mine by myself I will list the process I use.

After catching the bird I place her on the roost so she is facing the wall. Keeping a hand in the middle of the back and applying downward pressure. That gives me more control of the bird.
I use the fingers on that hand to lift the feathers on the neck and I can spray.
I then try for the wings....it's hard to control a bird alone. I do not always succeed with the wings.
Then I do between their legs by allowing them to partially stand while still keeping one hand on the back. I have to shove the spray nozzle into the feathers to get the skin.
Then it's time for the bum. I still have that hand on the back and use the spray bottle tip to get deep into the feathers.

It seems like using a tote and powder may actually be easier.
I may have to do that next time there are mites.

In 20+ years there have only been mites twice on my birds. For that I'm very grateful.

I agree with the others. Permethrin is your best defense. I use poultry dust in my nest boxes. Good luck.

If you get some diatomaceous earth for them to bathe in, it’ll kill them. To make it last longer I mix it with some dirt they like bathing in. You can get some from the pool section.

Yes great stuff. Chickens need to dust bath to control lice and mites. When it’s raining there needs to be a dry place for them to dust bath. I put Pestene in the dust holes. Ag Lime in the dust holes, beds and nests regularly.
lice and mites die in dust.

Someone probably already posted this idea days ago but in case not this is a really great chicken pest control that works on everything I’ve ever had especially when other things haven’t been effective. I’ve had very bad results personally with permethrin and especially DE (mostly treating for red roost mites). Best part is you can just spray on the chickens and coop, no need for a deep coop clean to begin treatment. Downside is the high pricetag.
