I am a new chicken mama and am not sure what this is and how to treat. Padme is my silkie and one of 5 in my coop (2 cochins, 2 RIR, 1 Silkie). I checked all other birds and maybe one other one has something similar but not like my Padme. Now we have red dirt and the birds are wet from the morning dew so it has looked like she was dirty and maybe her food was sticking to her. However when I got to her to clean her up, I noticed it was behind her little ear and then started researching. I appreciate help in identifying and treatment.

Where in this world do you live @Anna-J ?

Have you checked them over real well for mites and/or lice?

Google images of lice/mites and their eggs before the inspection so you'll know what you're looking for.

Part the feathers right down to the skin around vent, head/neck and under wings.

Best done well after dark with a strong flashlight/headlight, easier to 'catch' bird and also to check for the mites that live in structure and only come out at night to feed off roosting birds.

Look fast, they will scatter quickly once the feathers are parted and the light hits them.

Wipe a white paper towel along the underside of roost to look for red smears(smashed well fed mites).

I am in East Texas. No, nothing moving, and I didn't have any black or red things on my hands after handling any of them. I did check vents, under wings, base of neck, etc. and nothing. One of my hens might have some white stuff, but was hard to tell, but I would definitely treat her just in case, but what I saw on her was nothing like this.
