RIR, one of the more "assertive" birds in the flock. she does not show any signs of fear from any other birds...she recently had a lot of her coat change to yellowish about a few weeks ago...now all look picked out...I'm gone most of the day so I can't observe constantly...but have never seen her picked on, even now, or even skittish...she is about 17 months old...first molt?

I have seen a couple other birds with similar feather loss in the past but in a much smaller area, and they were also more dominant type birds too.

Areas of feather loss look like new pins growing in, so IMO a molt.

But in my flock I have never seen those large areas of new pins anywhere except on bums.

I looked closer today...there are tiny brown feathers? growing outta the little tips...guess she is gonna be fine.

And she'll be gorgeous once she gets a full complement of new feathers.

That's a good old fashioned molt. You hen looks like she is handling it well. Be prepared for lots of pin feathers!
