My rooster has started mating with a hen. Her comb is becoming increasingly bloody. I went out there today and there is a gash in it from where he was holding on. Is this normal?

I would get black salve or pick no more lotion and put on the comb so it will taste bad to him. That is not ok.

Is he young and inexperienced? Usually they grab the feather's on the neck or head. If he's just young and dumb he may grow out of it. If it's happening because he's being too rough I'd separate him. My RIR roo was pretty comical when he was first learning what to do about the hens but he never once has bloodied a hen and it's not something I would tolerate.
