Is this normal?

My hens are about 5 1/2 months old. They haven't started laying yet, but the roosters have been trying to mate with them. Is that normal for roosters before the hens start to lay? Does it mean we are getting a lot closer to our first egg? Thanks

Yes, it's normal for the rooster to mate with them before they lay an egg. A lot of my first eggs have been fertile. And yes, it means they are close to laying.
